Dual Boot On Separate Drives SATA + IDE
The drive is OK, as it still boots fine in the old computer.I am suspecting that I need some specific drivers for the new motherboard, but the new computer came with Software ▼ Security and Virus Office Software PC Gaming See More... That's all i have to do. I needed XP for some applications, so I purchased a 2nd hard-drive and loaded it with XP. Back up everything. Here are the steps I used to create my Dual boot xp/vista two HD config.1-backup all data from 320GB.2-disconnnted 80gb power and sata cable.3-disconnected 320gb sata cable.4-connect the orig 80gb sata then all your REGISTRY-entries on D also refer to the C-drive.

The part that supprised me was that the OS reassigned drive letter [C:] to the 80gb HD making all its registry entries correct and drive letter [K:] to the 320gb HD IDE mode is backward compatable with all IDE drives and also sets SATA drives to IDE emulation mode. My [ personal decision ] if I ran an OEM machine would be to run XP in Win7 XP Mode OR a Virtual Machine. I tried to install Win7 but it did not just work.
Ask ! Way cool. Otherwise, it's shrink partition, configure 2nd partition, install XP, Fix Boot Sector and just a bunch of "hassle" using (1) hard drive with MS BCD or GAG. If you go this route, I recommend that the win 7 drive is not connected to the motherboard while XP is being installed. I want to have that option at startup where I can chose XP or Vista and it will boot to that OS.
